8-legged Geniuses

My cousin Rob, who is 3 years my senior and currently works at super cool design firm Ammunition Group, once told me on a family vacation to the Virgin Islands that octopi were the single most frightening sea creatures.  I’d heard stories about devious octopi in aquariums sneaking in and out of cages, but their trickery was merely amusing; nothing to be afraid of, right?  Well, now even the scientists are baffled — nay, “gobsmacked” — by these wily cephalopods. The AP (RT-ed by HuffPo and others) reports that an octopus in the waters near Indonesia has been observed cleaning out, carrying around, and nestling in coconut shells that it found at the bottom of the ocean. Time will only tell what they’ll do next. Touché, cousin Rob. I’m scared.

From the Guy that was 1/4 Responsible for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

BREAKING NEWS!
Time.com’s brand new tech blog, Techland, just published a midnight-release article by Zack Whedon, one of the four writers who brought us Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Now, I wasn’t really into the sing-along blog until a peer at Penn directed a shortened theatrical version that one of my roommates produced and in which several of my friends starred; it was this connection that motivated me to read the Whedon article, which I normally would have skimmed or skipped completely.

The Techland post, hardly worth the hype that has had Twitter atweet all day, is a brief ode to the comic-book form, a few lines about Mr. Whedon’s upcoming six-issue Terminator series for Dark Horse Comics (this was the much-anticipated announcement), and a lot of talk about how an idiotic porn-lover who’s just like you can write awesome stories about people with super powers because producing internet content is cheap.

To end on a high note, here’s a clip from the Penn stage version of Dr. Horrible (note the face on the big screen at the beginning: they used Skype to project the face of the actor playing Dr. Horrible. That’s some creative media use!). Directed by Ben Jammin Grinberg, starring Michael Silverstein as Dr. Horrible and Cassidy Regan as Penny.
